Week #16 Vocabulary:
Brandt Line: A theory that suggests primarily that a great chasm in standard of living exists between the North-South divide and advocates development of the Third World; the north is “rich” and the south is “poor.”
Pangaea: a supercontinent that existed during the late Paleozoic and early Mesozoic eras, forming approximately 300 million years ago.
Imperialism: Western political and economic dominance in the 19th and 20th centuries over other parts of the world.
Blood Diamonds: a diamond mined in a war zone and sold to finance an insurgency, invading army's war efforts, or a warlord's activity.
AIDS: a disease of the human immune system caused by infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

Week #15: April 21st - April 25th

This week in class, we really brought home our learning and activity about Bomon from last week. We began the week with a brief history of Africa and a background on AIDS and then we moved on to learning about how everything plays into the situation at one time by watching the film "Hotel Rwanda." It was also short week due to ACT testing and Prom.

Week #15 Vocabulary:
UN: (United Nations) Countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.
WTO: (World Trade Organization) Deals with the rules of trade between nations at a global or near-global level.
NATO: (North Atlantic Treaty Organization) Safeguards the freedom and security of its member nations by political and military means.
EU: (European Union) A unique economic and political partnership between 27 democratic European countries to provide peace, prosperity and freedom for its 498 million citizens.
G8: (The Group of 8) An annual informal meeting of world leaders to discuss global issues and concerns.

Week #14: April 15th - April 19th

This week in class, we continued to look at the economic cooperation of countries by looking at comparative advantage as well as globalization. After that we started examining the geography of conflict in an activity called, "Bomon."

Week #14 Vocabulary:
Globalization: countries joining together economically through society, politics, and education. It also indicates a move away from nationalism towards a world-wide unification of ideas and ideals.
Westernization: Some countries’ view that globalization is an effort turn everything “American.”
Fair Trade: exchanges in which the terms of the deal meet the demands of justice.
Free Trade: a general openness to exchange goods and information between and among nations with few-to-no barriers-to-trade.
IGOs: (Inter-Governmental Organizations) Organizations made up of the governments of other countries.

Week #13: April 7th - April 11th

This week in class we continued our 3rd unit (on cooperation and conflict). We learned all about the basics of economics so that we can understand where much of our world conflict comes from.

Week #13 Vocabulary:
Primary Activity: taking and using natural resources directly (i.e. farming, mining, grazing).
Secondary Activity: using raw materials to produce something new and more valuable (i.e. auto manufacturing, auto-assembly).
Tertiary Activity: providing services to people (i.e. teachers, doctors, accountants).
Quaternary Activity: processing, managing, and distributing information (i.e. data processing, research)
Human Capital: The skills and abilities of a person or population; these are usually related to productivity and wealth of a country.

Week #12: April 1st - April 4th

This week we returned from a very restful Spring Break (hopefully), ready to jump right into our Unit 2 Project Presentations. We spent the majority of this week preparing and presenting, then we took a little time to debrief and prepare for our third and final unit on conflict and cooperation.

Week #12 Vocabulary:
Development Index: A composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income indices used to rank countries into four tiers of human development.
GDP: (Gross Domestic Product) The dollar value of all goods and services produced within a countries’ border in a given year.
GDP Per Capita: the productivity of each person; it is calculated by taking GDP and dividing it by the population.
Comparative Advantage: The ability to produce a product most efficiently given all the other products that could be produced.
Absolute Advantage: The ability to produce more of a given product using a given amount of resources.

Week #11: March 17th - March 21st

This week in class, we spent all of our time working on our next major assessment; the disaster project. We talked about how to research disasters as well as clean-up and innovation for the future. We also briefly reviewed presentation and powerpoint skills and lastly we talked a little about editing videos and photoshop/gimp.

Week #11 Vocabulary:
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA): an agency of the U.S. federal government which was created for the purpose of protecting human health and the environment by writing and enforcing regulations based on laws passed by Congress.
Eco Footprint: a measure of human demand on the Earth's ecosystems. It is a standardized measure of demand for natural capital that may be contrasted with the planet's ecological capacity to regenerate.
Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC): a permanent intergovernmental organization of 12 oil-exporting developing nations that coordinates and unifies the petroleum policies of its Member Countries.
Natural Disaster: a major adverse event resulting from natural processes of the Earth; examples include floods, volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, tsunamis, and other geologic processes.
Man-made Disaster: threats having an element of human intent, negligence, or error; or involving a failure of a human-made system. It results in huge loss of life and property.

Week #10: March 10th - March 14th

This week in class, we moved on to the last part of our second unit: natural disasters. We talked about resources and limitations as well as man-made disasters and how we can hopefully make ourselves safer in the future.

Week #10 Vocabulary:
River: : A large stream of water that drains an area of land and flows into another body of water.
Delta: A deposit of sand, silts, and pebbles that forms at the mouth of a river.
Mouth: The part of a river where its water flows into another body of water.
Tributary: A stream or river that flows into a larger stream or river.
Confluence: the flowing together or 2 or more streams.
